Workforce Planning Tool

An electrical contracting company had rapidly expanded via organic growth and M&A activity. The industry has traditionally relied on manual processes, tribal team member knowledge, and constant communication for aligning supply (contractors) and demand (jobs). The increase in leads and demand exacerbated the non-value add time associated with ensuring the company could deliver exceptional quality and value to all their customers while effectively managing personnel and sub-contractors.

A Client Success Story

Leading commercial electrical contracting firm

Challenge

Te company was using several technical platforms from job creating to execution and still used manual visuals for true project planning at the individual resource. Further, the existing platforms did not properly capture the detailed required at either the job or contractor level to effectively match resources to the right jobs. Management required multiple communication points and validations everyday to confirm resource plans.

Solution

We built a project planning source-of-truth for which could be easily adjusted based on evolving needs and resources. We worked with leadership and operators to design processes and technology to capture and validate the required level of detail for supply and demand, using both traditional entry methods and AI-enabled automatic speech recognition (ASR) for conversion into data inputs. The Resource Planning Tool builds individual resource-specific teams based on project parameters pre-determined by the project teams to maximize project economics and labor productivity, while identifying gaps for hiring or subcontracting. We deployed a simple, rules-based application permitting the project leaders to view and adjust project teams based on data newly housed in a single system.

Outcome

We moved from three systems used for project planning down to a single platform, alleviating over 20 manhours per week spent on project reconfiguration while increasing labor productivity and reducing execution risk associated with improper resource staffing. Enabled teams to right-size project teams and thus project economics by not over-staffing relative to skills required. Lastly, the Tool provides HR with insights into future personnel requirements.
